GEORGINA OTTAWAY

Portraiture is the substance of Georgina’s practice. Incorporating memories and her family with found objects consisting of doors, scaffolding boards, slate and floor boards which she uses as her ‘canvas’. These ‘canvases’ usually have a deeper meaning that link to the person within the piece. The use of oil paints is dominant within her work as this is the way she creates texture through the use of palette knives applying thick layers to the painting allowing the paint to appear flesh-like.

In this family portrait, the subjects are Georgina’s close family as they are now standing at the back and as they were as children standing at the front. Each person is in behind a younger version of themselves, resulting in a peculiar family portrait. Through finding old photographs of family members at weddings and celebrations she has found family trees and meanings of surnames. By exploring her family history in this way, Georgina is seeking to find her own identity amongst her family.
