LOLLY ATHERTON

Using my camera as a tool, my lens based practice involves the manipulation and distortion of photographs. I want to create a sense of uncertainty within you.

My artwork Confronts and confounds expectations by presenting the image of the human body in a way it's never been seen before. Favoring distortion, as well as aiming to create a sense of disorientation. Despite my artwork depicting recognizable imagery, such as the human torso and limbs, I aim to make the familiar, unfamiliar. I work with both still and moving image. Experimenting with Photoshop and projection. Using myself as an artistic substance. I explore the human flesh and body; my multi-dimensional art invites you to consider paradigms of life you perhaps ignore. My art is a journey of experimentation, the flesh beyond the body, but most importantly, how it relates to society and issues of the human body. Inspiration derived from Rober Gober’s piece, ‘Untitled 1989-90’, I admired how he addressed the concept of the uncanny, fabricating an aesthetic experience through his creation.

Referencing Sigmund Freud’s theory of ‘The Uncanny’, his underlined circumstances in which the uncanny can occur is an influence upon the direction my artwork takes.
