Rhia Toulson is a conceptual artist that specialises in social, cultural and political issues through a variety of mediums, to bring light to situations and issues that are currently being faced worldwide. 

 

‘Refugee Crisis’ is an interactive and educational room, that explores the concept of the refugee crisis as being a global issue. This room intends to allow the viewer to experience a familiar and comforting environment of the home, yet is juxtaposed by the alarming refugee imagery.

 

Presented as an Ikea themed living room, it contrasts Ikea’s ‘Ideal Home’ concept with the shocking reality of those that are forever searching for a ‘Safe Home’, after being driven out of their own due to climate change, war and violence. Whilst commenting on how western society has become desensitised to the unimaginable traumas that these people suffer, it also highlights our lack of knowledge on other refugee crises that exist, other than the Syrian.
